India retained its position as the world's fastest-growing economy, registering a GDP rate of 7.9% for the January-March 2016 quarter, up from 7.3% the previous quarter,
according to data released by the government on Tuesday.
By comparison, the world's number two economy, China, saw growth slowing to 6.7% for the 2016 January-March quarter, the slowest posted by the world's second largest economy in seven years.
India's numbers were better than analysts' estimates. A Reuters survey of economists expected India's GDP to have grown 7.5 per cent between January and March.
India's GDP rate for 2015-1016 was 7.6%.
India has been ranked among the 10 wealthiest countries globally with total individual wealth of $5,200 billion, but this is largely owing to its large population, a report said, adding that on a per capita basis, the average Indian is "quite poor".
According to the report by New World Wealth, India has been ranked seventh in the list of top 10 wealthiest countries in the world, which was topped by the United States with total individual wealth of $48,700 billion.
"India only makes the W10 (10 wealthiest) due to its large population. On a per capita basis, the average Indian is quite poor," the report said, adding that over the past 15 years the country grew "strongly".
Moreover, India has overtaken Italy this past year. Australia and Canada are expected to overtake Italy in the next couple of years.
